This book starts out so slowly that it was hard to keep on reading. I almost abandoned it several times, but I saw that it got really good reviews on Amazon, so I kept saying 'one more chapter' until the story picked up. It kept on improving right to the end.

Jennifer Becton has created a whole person out of a very underdeveloped Pride and Prejudice character. She developed a character that was realistic based on what we know of Charlotte from P&P. This Charlotte could plausibly marry for security and be pious and proper throughout a marriage to a parson, but she wanted more out of life and envied her friends' loving marriages. This story explores how that could happen for her. Interestingly, Charlotte values her judgement of character only to have it all challenged similar to Elizabeth in P&P.

The character of Maria was also sketched out in more detail than in P&P, and I liked what the author did with her, including the improvement of her character throughout the novel. The original characters in this book were enjoyable, the villain truly nasty. There was a nod to Mansfield Park with the elopement. The romantic ending was predictable but the scenes leading up to it were pleasingly surprising.

This book is well-written technically, with a few sections of language reminiscent of Jane Austen herself, for example, the letter from Miss Farmington regarding the picnic. The vocabulary is not intending to be overly impressive like some Regency romances can be; the author sticks to mostly words of less than four syllables. She is Regency-correct in many areas where other authors make mistakes particularly in length of mourning, mourning attire, and language appropriate to the period. There were quite a few good descriptive scenes such as the scenery on the walk in the forest with Basford, the ballroom scenes, and the gentlemens' clothing.

If it weren't for my impression of the first third of this book being unengaging, I would give it four stars.

Charlotte Collins A Continuation of Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice Jennifer Becton 9781453740477 Books Reviews

Enjoyable story. I think what made it happier is that Mr. Collins has died. Sorry, but obnoxious and sycophantic behavior just made his character unlikable. Charlotte was not happy, her child died within the first year of life, and Mr. Collins has went his own way giving constant time to writing sermons and fawning over Lady Catherine. Charlotte needs to move out of the rectory so rent a cottage from Lady Catherine. Sir William and Lady Lucas are getting older and are sickly, so Maria moves in with Charlotte so she has a chaperone to the balls and society functions. Young Maria is more on the ball than Kitty Bennet and Lydia Wickham, but still wants to marry. She has a young man that loves her, but she sees Mr. Card as a friend. Enter a young American and his Uncle to the neighborhood. Instant love for Maria. Refuses proposal from Mr. Card and wins the censure of the entire town. Charlotte and Maria head to London to visit their cousins. Returning to the cottage, Maria's censure has passed, but new a problem develops regarding Charlotte. Friends come to their aid and both Charlotte and Maria finally have lives filled with love.
Poor Mr. Collins has met his maker in a horse and wagon accident leaving Mrs. Collins to fend for herself as best she can. Because her parents are in poor health and strapped for funds, Charlotte's lively young sister Maria had come to live with her and Charlotte attempts to launch her into polite society.

This is a quiet story, much in the style of Jane Austen, that accentuates the relationships between men and women of that era and especially the fragile behavior that women were subject to regarding their 'virtue' and public reputation.

Charlotte is all that is prim, proper, and cautious concerning polite society while younger sister Maria is exuberant, lively, and optimistic about her prospects.

Sure enough, both women attract men into their lives but first impressions are not to be trusted. In spite of Charlotte's strict and unbending rules for widows and single ladies, she is caught up in an unscrupulous attempt to blackmail her into sexual favors. Each lady has her own "hero to the rescue" but can even they be trusted?

It is such a beautiful story of love, friendship and the destructive and vicious nature of gossip which seeks to destroy Charlotte's innocence thereby making her an outcast even in her own community.
I put off reading this one as the character Charlotte Lucas Collins wasn't a favorite of mine. Please don't follow my example! This is a good story. The writing is entertaining, and I found myself liking Charlotte.

She was a widow, living in reduced circumstances and trying to help her sister find a loving match in marriage. Charlotte had chosen security over love when she married Mr Collins -- she doubted that the emotion existed, but had witnessed it in the marriages of her friends and family. Charlotte decided she would never know it personally.

Events bring her introductions to two very different men, but Charlotte has a difficult time finding out which man is truly a good man. It takes the ruin of her reputation to discover which man is worthy of respect

Loved the book -- it is a keeper. Thank you Jennifer Becton for a delightful story!
