Entropy Political Intrigue in 2048 eBook Bryn Lucas

Dylan knows he is a cog in a big machine. It pays not to make waves, and just go on with his boring little life. Because at least he has a job, and can afford to eat, pay rent and woo the occasional girl. But Dylan is a reb at heart, and has always wanted to make a difference. He talks the talk on the underweb, but will he walk the walk when the opportunity presents itself?
Set in a dystopian UK 30 years from now, the universe of Entropy is missing one major world event from ours, and it has made all the difference. In her debut novel, Lucas paints an engaging picture that is a disturbingly slippery slope; it becomes very easy to place yourself in this society. While the progress of relationships was a little awkward, it becomes a very interesting game of who to trust and will Dylan survive. While I don’t see this continuing on as series necessarily, I hope to see more of Lucas in the future, maybe with more stories in the same universe.

Entropy Political Intrigue in 2048 eBook Bryn Lucas Reviews

Set in a dystopic and dismal not-so-far-off future, Bryn Lucas explores morality vs. societal mindsets through his main character Dylan Sharkey. The novel starts off in the city of London, and follows Sharkey as he makes his way through suburbia into the outskirts of the metropolis, where the unfortunates of society make their lives as street urchins in hoboville, reminiscint of The Great Depression of the early twentieth century. Unfortunately, the unwashed masses are even more upsetting to encounter because of the fact that they are the predicted future of the world. Sharkey’s world is made up of people that are eschewed by the “fortunate” minority that still have jobs and homes, i.e. the working, homed, non-geriatric public; those to whom the “others” do not exist. The homeless population is set up outside of the usual city-limits, and the retired are packed like sardines into aged and decrepit buildings in order for the government to prolong their lives and the money going back into the government. Out of site, out of mind. As the story progresses, Sharkey must make the decision whether to join the underground rebellion and discover what is truly going on in the commercialized government that now controls every aspect of the world.

As a whole, the story is an intriguing one, making one question if this is the future that we are heading towards as a society, when businesses are gaining more and more control of the world around us, and media and thoughts are becoming more streamlined and less individualistic. However, the writing of the novel itself makes a connection to the story a bit difficult. Granted, some of the disconnect for me might be from the fact that Lucas is a Brit, presumably living in the UK, while I am an American living in the U.S.; but I found it a trying read. The phrasing and general language took some getting used to, which is perfectly fine, and even enjoyable, but there seems to be a disconnect between the language of the story and reality. While I enjoy elevated language as much as the next English Literature enthusiast, this novel was riddled with overly pedantic language that took away from story- and character-development. One of the main side-characters in particular, Higgins is described as a man who read the dictionary like a novel, and thus used overly pedantic and complicated language, which detracted from the things he was saying and the knowledge he was to impart.

Similarly, Sharkey develops a relationship with a woman that he met at a “retiroplex” outside of London, but the description of the connection between the two characters is described in such a way that it is unbelievable. Although the characters profess their love for one another, the depth of emotion is as deep as a shallow puddle in the street after a light spring shower. Lucas uses his power as an author to “tell” the reader about this relationship, rather than “show” how the characters develop these feelings. This makes the reader question the authenticity of the characters’ emotions, and thus the reliability of the narrator and author.

In general, I enjoyed this book for the ideas behind the thought process, but it was a difficult story to really connect with, making it unlikely that I will endure the process of attempting to read this book a second time.
Wow! What a page turner! Entropy is a fantastic novel of a future maybe not so far off. From the start the reader is thrown into incredible images of a society left behind and let down by the omnipotent government and its’ new policies. Enter a tent city where Big Brother may be anyone and everyone around you, ready to sell you out as a traitor for the exchange of the meager luxuries to make life look less bleak. Dylan isn’t one to keep his head down and accept the status quo. He wants change and he stumbles upon what he thinks can make a difference but does what he knows make any difference? Who can he trust? What is the truth and what is a lie used to manipulate him? This beautifully written novel will have you glued to the pages and questioning everything. The characters you encounter are well thought out and very believable; they could be the person next to you on the bus without too much imagination. The plot was wonderfully crafted with just the right amount of twists to leave you guessing and built anticipation that has you reaching for the next event as if your life really depended on it. This futuristic creation harkens back to the eye-opening classics and comes just as recommended. A great read whether you believe it to be a peak into what’s to come or not.
